The case began with an extraordinary ransom demand. Investigators say the perpetrator initially asked for 66 bitcoins — worth roughly CZK 152 million — warning that if the payment did not arrive, bottled drinking water across the country would be contaminated. On Saturday, in an email sent to a Czech newsroom, the blackmailer complained of being ignored and escalated his threats, alleging that two poisoned bottles had already been placed in the capital.

For Brno residents, the news has sparked concern but also caution. Authorities have urged the public to buy only factory-sealed drinks and to remain attentive when shopping. Supermarkets and shopping centers have stepped up security, with staff instructed to check shelves and customers encouraged to immediately report any suspicious bottles by calling the national emergency line 158. So far, police stress that no harm has been reported.

“Police officers encounter threats quite often, but we still approach them with maximum seriousness and caution,” noted Jozef Bocán, spokesman for the Czech Police Presidium, speaking to CNN Prima News. His words underline the careful balance the authorities are attempting to strike — acknowledging the seriousness of the threat while avoiding unnecessary panic.

Ricin itself is a substance with a dark reputation. Extracted from castor beans, it is lethally efficient in even minute quantities, disrupting the body’s ability to produce proteins. Depending on exposure, poisoning can cause respiratory failure, multiple organ collapse, and death within three days. Specialists working alongside police are now analyzing whether the Brno sample was capable of causing real harm or whether its discovery was meant primarily to stoke fear. Full laboratory results are expected shortly.

The Czech Republic has faced such threats before. In 2020, a prisoner in Plzeň was convicted for sending letters in which he menaced several cities with plans to poison municipal water supplies unless his financial demands were met. That case, though ultimately resolved, highlighted the vulnerabilities surrounding essential resources like drinking water.

Internationally, ricin has been linked to several alarming incidents. In the United States, letters laced with the toxin were intercepted in 2013 on their way to President Barack Obama and other officials. In Germany, a Tunisian man was arrested in 2018 after producing ricin at home in Cologne, raising fears of its potential use in terrorism. More recently, Canadian authorities stopped a ricin-laden letter addressed to the White House in 2020. Each of these cases, like the one now unfolding in Brno, demonstrates why authorities are compelled to act swiftly, even if the credibility of such threats remains uncertain.

For Brno, the immediate concern is not only whether the recovered bottle was truly dangerous, but also what the threat signifies — a test of public resilience, of trust in everyday safety, and of how quickly communities can respond to the specter of contamination. While no confirmed cases of poisoning have emerged, the city finds itself at the forefront of a story that blends criminal extortion with the haunting possibility of biological danger.
