The ultimate guide to English-friendly barbers in Brno (tested by an expat who really needed a trim)

Real reviews of English-friendly barbers in Brno. First stop: Gypsy Barber Collective — authentic, affordable, and surprisingly welcoming.

Getting a haircut is always a complicated moment. I’m genuinely happy to still have hair at my age, but I can’t say I enjoy going to the barber — which is probably why I often end up looking like a mess.

My complicated relationship with barbers goes way back. As a kid, I used to go to a legendary duo, Gino and Pietro (rest in peace), who took care of my whole family. For years I swore I’d never let anyone else touch my hair — even though one of them had Parkinson’s, which isn’t ideal when scissors are involved.

Eventually, I started cutting my own hair with a clipper, completely bald. Later, as I moved from city to city, I cheated on my original barbers — and one of my favorites today is the guy who inherited their old shop in Catania (Gentiluomo Club in via Palmanova, for those passing through Sicily: not sure they’re expat-friendly, but they’re definitely friendly — and what a haircut!).

Here in Brno, I’ve had two hairdressers — a man and a woman — whom I won’t name here, because this isn’t the place (and because, in the woman’s case, English wasn’t exactly her strong suit).

So, I decided to start this post — one I’ll update monthly or every other month, depending on how fast my hair grows — to test Brno’s hairdressers, especially from a language perspective.

How did I choose where to start? I simply Googled “hairdresser Brno” and filtered by proximity (I live downtown) and by whether the site or booking system was even partially in English.

Let’s start with the first one.

✂️ Gypsy Barber Collective: A No-Nonsense Haircut in the Heart of Brno

Located just off Šilingrovo náměstí, precisely at Biskupská 267/8, Brno-střed, this small barbershop is as local as it gets.

🪞 First Impressions & Atmosphere

The place is minimalist, clean, and clearly popular — several Czech clients were waiting when I arrived. The “boss” of the shop, who also became my interpreter, spoke excellent English and supervised the young barber actually cutting my hair (who wasn’t fluent in English — but to be fair, I don’t know all the technical haircut terms either).

💬 Service & Communication

Punctual, efficient, and calm. No small talk, no fanfare — just Czech professionalism. The haircut took about an hour, which shows real care, especially since I barely gave any instructions (my usual risky strategy). Communication worked perfectly thanks to the owner’s translations.

💵 Price & Atmosphere

300 CZK for a full cut — very reasonable for Brno city center. Most clients were locals, but the mood wasn’t closed off. I was offered a glass of water; the boss enjoyed a beer (this is the Czech Republic, after all). Background: reggaeton. Unexpectedly fitting.

✅ Final Verdict

Not a tourist trap, not a hipster temple — just an honest, capable, and slightly chaotic barbershop where you’ll leave looking better than you arrived.

Expat-friendly rating: ★★★★☆
(Not 100% English-speaking, but definitely expat-tolerant and wallet-friendly.)
