Discover Brno’s enchanting Christmas 2024, with markets, traditions, and festivities lighting up the city.

For reasons that remain a mystery, Christmas seems to approach earlier each year. In the past, people would decorate their trees in December, but now, Christmas lights and decorations start appearing as soon as Halloween ends – a holiday we’ve embraced from the U.S. While the festive atmosphere is magical, enduring it for nearly two months can feel overwhelming.
This year, Brno has already begun transforming into a holiday wonderland, glowing with lights and festive decor. Let’s dive into how the city is preparing for this extended Christmas season.
On 22 November, Brno will kick off its Christmas celebrations with the illumination of the tree at Náměstí Svobody, marking the beginning of the city’s most significant annual festival. This year is extra special as Brno celebrates the 100th anniversary of its first “Christmas tree of the Republic” and its debut as the European Capital of Christmas 2024. Organisers have even joked that Brno Christmas will be “the second-best Christmas in the world… after the one at home!” (ah ah!)
The title of European Capital of Christmas 2024 was awarded to Brno for its balance of tradition and modernity. Key factors included the festive markets’ community spirit, their integration into the city’s structure, and their solidarity-focused design. The accolade further boosts Brno’s growing reputation as a must-visit destination during the holiday season.
Because Brno Christmas isn’t just a local event: it’s a magnet for tourists. With over 1.5 million visitors last year, the festival stands as one of the city’s largest tourism draws. Mayor Markéta Vaňková – as reported by Brno Daily – highlights its dual appeal: “It’s a modern festival that still honors our traditions. It showcases Brno as an attractive destination, boosts local culture, and fosters cooperation among local artists and entrepreneurs.”
The tradition of public Christmas trees in the Czech Republic began in 1924, introduced by writer Rudolf Těsnohlídek, inspired by Copenhagen’s festive displays. This year’s tree, a 150-year-old white fir, comes from the Mendel University’s Masaryk Forest School.
The tree’s ceremonial journey begun on 16 November. Its illumination on 22 November will feature performances by the NdB Opera and the NdBrass quintet, accompanied by a surprise story about Brno’s famous dragon.

This year’s visual theme revolves around the beloved dragon in a sweater, a hit from last year. Visitors can find it on mugs, chocolates, and even as a plush toy. The dragon shares the spotlight with other animal motifs celebrating the centenary of Janáček’s opera The Cunning Little Vixen.
