Brno could co-host the 2029 World Hockey Championship with Hungary, using Arena Brno set to open in 2026.
In 2029, Brno might host part of the World Hockey Championship, co-organizing with Hungary. The Czech Republic would share hosting duties, with one group playing in Brno, where a state-of-the-art multifunctional arena is scheduled to open within two years.
In a recent interview on the Kometa Brno website, the presidents of both national hockey associations, Alois Hadamczik and Zsuzsanna Kolbenheyer, discussed their interest in the collaboration.
“It all started with a phone call from the president of the Hungarian Hockey Association, who wanted to discuss with me the possibility of co-hosting the World Cup in 2029. My immediate reaction was that it was an excellent idea that could be combined with the new multifunctional arena in Brno”, Hadamczik stated. Following a meeting with Kolbenheyer, the two leaders agreed to move forward with the proposal.
However, Hungary still needs to win approval from the International Ice Hockey Federation Congress. Budapest would be the championship’s central hub. As Kolbenheyer pointed out, Hungary is actively searching for co-organizers, as Budapest only has one venue capable of hosting such a large event.
The Arena Brno, projected to be completed in 2026, is key to this plan. According to the official site, the arena is “the largest strategic project in Brno”. Located at the Brno Exhibition Centre, it will be equipped with cutting-edge technology, hosting both sports and cultural events. Construction began in September 2023, and the first visitors are expected by 2026. Conveniently, the “Brno Arena” bus stop is already in place, further ensuring easy access to the new venue.
With the MotoGP’s return and the potential to host the World Hockey Championship, Brno is on the verge of solidifying its place on the global sports map.
